2018-Atual. A Julia Toolbox for Solving Non-Linear DSGE Models Descrição: Nonlinear DSGE models with endogenous state-dependent regime switching are quite costly to be solved due to the computation burdens associated with the grid methods commonly used. This paper presents a set of tools developed within the Julia Language that aims to reduce such costs. Julia Language has similar learning costs to Matlab Language and can be as fast as FORTRAN, or even C++. The tools include N-Dimensional interpolation and extrapolation functions - both linear and Delaunay methods -, Newton-type with dogleg strategy solvers for constrained and unconstrained nonlinear system of equations, and functions for integrating out the uncertainty associated with expected variables. Examples with applications to simple and more complex models are provided. Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. Integrantes: Gian Paulo Soave - Coordenador. Membro: Gian Paulo Soave.
2017-2018. Assessing the Federal and State-Level Fiscal Multipliers: the Brazilian case Descrição: In this paper we employ an empirical framework that makes it possible to desintagle shocks coming from both federal and state levels. The methodology accounts for the potential heterogeneity in the impulse responses across the states - which might be a problem in countries with substantial differences in economic and social development across regions -, and (within-country) institutional framework problems that emerge from political games incentives. We use of a Panel VARX (PVARX) estimated through Bayesian methods coupled with an hierarchical prior and a dynamic factor structure. We illustrate our method by assessing the empirical effects of fiscal shocks on private activity in the Brazilian states. Sign restricted impulse response functions for private GDP and unemployment to fiscal shocks suggest a relative homogeneity between the five Brazilian regions but idiosyncratic multipliers of federal and state expenditures show a great deal of heterogeneity in the state level - even between states belonging to the same region. Especially, the states present magnitudes of different fiscal multipliers depending on the origin of public expenditure - state or federal level.. Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. 2017-Atual. Financial Innovations, Systemic Risk, and the Emerging Markets Business Cycles Descrição: Global and domestic financial conditions play central roles in the business cycles in Emerging Economies. This paper shows that a model with a collateral constraint in which news shocks about future financial environment interacting with a Fisherian Debt-Deflation mechanism produces boom-bust cycle in debt, asset prices, and consumption consistent with the stylized facts for EM. Good news about financial conditions generate incentives for the agents to take on debt, raising leverage. However, higher leverage ratio makes the economy more exposed to a systemic risk of sudden stops. Typical business cycle technological shocks can produce severe implications depending on the state of nature. Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. Integrantes: Gian Paulo Soave - Coordenador. 2017-Atual. Fiscal Multipliers in Emerging Economies: The Role of Sovereign Risk Descrição: Fiscal multipliers are found to be smaller in emerging markets than in advanced economies. Using a Bayesian Smooth Transition VAR for a set of emerging economies, I found evidence that multipliers are lower (or even negative) whenever a measure of sovereign risk is high. Motivated by this fact, I argue that fiscal multipliers may depend on sovereign default risk, and I propose a model in which the fiscal multiplier is a function of the likelihood of sovereign default. During crises, the government has an incentive to engage in fiscal stimulus, because of the increase in involuntary unemployment. Keynesian multipliers arise whenever the sovereign default risk is low. However, expansionary fiscal policy in times of high indebtedness may trigger a sudden stop in economy capital inflow. Because private agents make forecasts about future financial conditions in the economy, the higher sovereign risk leads to increased precautionary savings, lowering fiscal multipliers. 2017-Atual. Algorithms For Solving Fisherian Models With Stock Endogenous Collateral Constraints Descrição: This project analyzes some algorithms for solving for decentralized equilibrium in multidimensional, occasionally binding Fisherian Models in which the collateral constraint is based on the value of some stock asset. This kind of model is numerically challenging because an extrapolation step is (usually) needed to compute the next period quantity of the asset. When there are available closed-form solutions, both Carrol's Endogenous Grid Method and Maliar and Maliar's Envelope Condition Method perform faster, yet with comparable accuracy as standard Euler Equation Methods. In models with complex collateral constraint, the set of available methods is substantially reduced, and the project presents a hybrid version of the Envelope Condition Method that is accurate and computationally cheaper than standard Euler Equation Methods. 2017-Atual. Leverage, Wage Rigidity, Asset Prices, and Sudden Stops Descrição: This paper studies the role played by wage rigidity in a workhorse Fisherian model of endogenous financial crises. In such a class of models, wage rigidity has several important implications. First, it reinforces the Debt-Deflation mechanism associated with the credit externality, which emerges due to the presence of price of capital into the collateral constraint. Second, infrequent renegotiation of wages makes profits riskier: under lesser pro-cyclical and volatile wages there is a reduction in hedging from dividends, since profits in good times are higher compared with bad times. Finally, because wages can only be partially adjusted in a distressing time, real rigidity affects the frequency, the magnitude, and the duration of a crisis. Interestingly, wage rigidity helps the model to account for the observed pattern of the asset prices during sudden stops. Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa.
